Former St. Jude director Dr. Joseph V. Simone remembered as 'a giant in the field of oncology'
Dr. Joseph V. Simone, a former director of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital whose research was crucial in developing treatments for leukemia, HIV/AIDS and other cancers and catastrophic illnesses, has died.
Simone, 85, died Jan.
21 in Sandy Springs, Georgia, where he lived.
Colleagues remembered Simone as a fearless and tireless pioneer in the effort to find effective treatments for the numerous childhood cancers and illnesses that are the focus of the Memphis-based hospital founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962.
“Dr. Simone was an extraordinary leader and a giant in the field of oncology,” said Dr. James R. Downing, president and CEO of St. Jude, in a statement. “Our hospital — in truth, the world — owes a great debt of gratitude to him for his many accomplishments."
